Bad Weather Procedures

Bad Weather Procedures

Inclement weather can impact the Runge Independent School District and compromise the safety of students and staff. Winter weather may involve freezing rain and icing conditions that may cause school closures or delays. Occasionally, hurricanes, tropical storms and severe rainfall can impact operations.

Several factors come into play before a decision is made to close school, delay the operating of school, or dismiss school early. These include:

● The safety, health, and welfare of students and staff;
● The transportation of students from home to school and back; and
● The disruption caused when school starts late, dismisses early, or is closed.

If inclement weather affects the Runge ISD area, the Superintendent will make a decision to delay or cancel school on the day in question. No announcements will be made when schools maintain their regularly scheduled hours. Below is the Runge ISD procedure for bad weather.

● At or before 4:00 am, staff from Runge ISD’s Emergency Operations team will deploy to assess weather and roadway conditions. Runge ISD Emergency Operations will go into an alert status and will work with Karnes county Office of Emergency Management, Karnes County Sheriff's Department, and City of Runge.

● By 4:30 am, the Runge ISD Emergency Operations will visually inspect various areas across the district for icy, wet, or dry roads and monitor weather information resources.

● Road conditions are analyzed along with other related information available from other school districts.

● If roads are questionable, the Superintendent will consider findings and recommendations.

● The Superintendent makes every effort to make a decision by 6:00 am whether or not to delay or cancel school.

What if bad weather hits during school hours?

● If weather conditions deteriorate during the school day, a decision is made as soon as possible if an early release is needed to get students home safely. If weather conditions appear that they will resolve during the school day, then students will be kept until regular dismissal time.

● School bus riders: In case of early release due to bad weather or flooding in the area, buses will depart the school at a designated time set forth by the Superintendent. If transportation cannot get home, students will be taken back to Runge ISD.
